Autodesk Map™ 6 delivers precision mapping and powerful GIS analysis to engineers, planners, utility managers, and technicians enabling them to create, maintain and produce maps, integrate data from many sources and formats including Oracle® Spatial; perform GIS analysis, and produce thematic maps. Built on the AutoCAD® 2002 foundation, Autodesk Map and as a client to Oracle is part of an entire GIS workflow solution from Autodesk. Users can work with multiple drawings, and multiple users can edit the same map simultaneously. With the product’s Internet tools and direct access to Autodesk® Point A, Autodesk Map provides real-time connection to colleagues, customers, and industry information.

NEW: Classification—Classification enables users to assign specific properties to objects, and identify, manipulate or select these objects by their description (e.g., road, river) rather than as simple primitives (lines, circles, arcs).
For example, the feature name assigned to an object may be very general (e.g. “road”) with no or few classified properties, or very specific (e.g. 2 lane road) with many required properties.

Autodesk Map 6 introduces critical GIS concepts:

Class Definition: Enable class definition to refer to any object property
Object Classification: Allow users to tag objects with a defined classification
Management of Classified Object: Easily identify tagged objects so that they can be selected, manipulated, easily accessible via the well-known AutoCAD Object Property Window
Hierarchy of classes: Allow users to create classes within classes (e.g. Transportation and Expressway being one sub-category of Transportation)

    NEW: COGO (coordinate geometry)—For mapping professionals, COGO allows the creation of highly accurate maps very quickly, using terminology and concepts with which they are familiar. While creating any Autodesk Map linear entity, Autodesk Map 6 offers COGO input options that are dynamically available to the users:
Angle distance
Bearing distance
Azimuth distance
Deflection distance
In addition, the ability to extract geometry information (inverse/inquiry) including line and curve details, area, slope, and coordinates from any line or arc are available using Autodesk Map 6.


    NEW: Annotation—Autodesk Map’s new Annotation tool displays textual values on objects in the maps. Users can define annotation templates based on text properties and expressions based on attribute values and/or object properties. Annotation is also referred as labels.



   Polygon Object—Integrated new multiloop polygon object throughout the product:
Creation and editing of polygon objects, which may include islands and holes
Control of the polygon fill and hatch
Full support of polygon objects with existing query/saveback, projection/ transformations, and property alterations
Usage of polygon objects as the preferred mapping for polygonal data on both Autodesk Map import and export, ESRI shapefile included
Usage of polygon objects as the preferred mapping for Autodesk MapGuide® poly-polygons on both import and export
Creation of data centroids from polygon objects into polygon topology without data loss
Conversion of closed polylines or polygon topology into polygon objects
Full support for Oracle Spatial polygon geometry

Flexible, feature-based Oracle® schema as an alternative data model allows you to define features in an Oracle schema
Record locking allows concurrent access to data by multiple users

Full Oracle9i™ support
Increased support for Autodesk Map and Oracle Spatial geometry with the new polygon object delivering direct geometry mapping and round-tripping fidelity between Autodesk Map and Oracle Spatial geometries.

   Import/Export Enhancements—The FME Import-Export engine provides a powerful method to exchange data with other GIS and mapping industry standard formats providing interoperability with all major GIS software. Autodesk Map 6 Import/Export capabilities include:
Enhanced attribute export
Direct polygon topology export
Enhanced attribute import including databases
In addition, Autodesk Map imports and exports maps from standard mapping file formats including ArcView® shapefile, ArcInfo® coverages, and E00 from ESRI®, MapInfo MIF/MID™, and Microstation® DGN™.



Drawing Cleanup Enhancements—Commonly, maps contain inaccuracies resulting from surveying, digitizing, or scanning errors. Autodesk Map 6 improves its series of tools to correct errors and eliminate unnecessary levels of detail for presentation in large-scale maps so that users can build a topology and perform map analysis.

Topology Enhancements—Autodesk Map 6 improves its topology functionality as a set of connections that establishes how nodes, links, and polygons relate to each other when performing spatial analysis. This analysis includes network tracing, shortest-path routing, polygon overlay, and polygon buffer generation.

Updated Coordinate Systems—Autodesk Map 6 leverages the latest capabilities of its coordinate system engine. The enhancements include additional data content provided by adding new coordinate system support.

Tutorial Enhancements—The Autodesk Map tutorials have been reformatted in order to enhance the user experiences to Autodesk® Point A, Autodesk Map provides real-time connection to colleagues, customers, and industry information.
