Belt Collins’ focus on innovative landscape design is clearly evident throughout this large-scale development which hugs the Pearl River in Southern China. That focus is well demonstrated in a landscape design that provides a refreshing perspective on residential developments in China.

Tropical sub-themes such as Mexican, Polynesian, Californian and Spanish were introduced to create a unique identity for each of Star River’s residential districts. These districts were then seamlessly connected via artfully flowing pathways. Another notable landscape element is a nearly half-mile timber boardwalk cantilevered over the adjacent Pearl River.

Reinforcing the landscape theme is the extensive use of water features. Water in every imaginable form can be seen, heard and experienced within major vantage points of the project. One observer said that the landscape design is truly a celebration of water.

This six-acre urban complex in the heart of Hong Kong Island's business area consists of three luxury hotel/apartment towers, a major office building, and the largest shopping center on Hong Kong Island. The hotels include the Island Shangri-La, the Marriot Hong Kong, and the Conrad.

The complex consists of a multi-level series of low- to high-rise structures terracing down a steep slope, complete with a variety of roof gardens and interior atriums.

As a government requirement, the project made history in its effort to preserve an existing banyan tree, which remained in its original location while its environment was totally altered.

Belt Collins was responsible for the overall design development of the external areas including the choice and arrangement of all plant material. In addition, the firm designed all hardscape areas including materials, design patterns and general layout of walks, walls, water features, pools, and paving.

The landscape for Habitat Garden matches that of the architecture in both quality of design and finishes. Clean, timelessly modern design expression creates serene yet impressive environment for both resident and visitors.

Water is thematically a key element in both the public and private landscapes. Existing canals border and cut through the overall site giving a quiet character of historic romanticism. New canals have been added with a design character similar to those found in historic water-oriented communities nearby. The new canals follow the route of the primary vehicular road throughout the project. Private houses facing onto this canal enjoy the special feature of a bridge/driveway crossing the canal. Additional public sector water features include a phase one naturalistic lake with clubhouse and a phase two smaller lake.

Planting for Habitat Garden has been carefully selected and used generously throughout both public and private sectors. Primary and secondary roads are each given their own identity by a different species of street tree. The common denominator of planting among private houses is that of bamboo. Bamboo is typically planted at both the front entry gardens and as a backdrop for every house’s rear pool. The soft texture and gentle sound of wind rustling through the leaves will create a sense of gentle serenity that complements the ever-present water.
