Belt Collins prepared the landscape master plan for this 2,100- square-meter mixed-use urban renewal project, which includes office and retail space. In recognition of the site’s partially European heritage, the firm’s detailed design for the plaza incorporated an Italian piazza theme in the public open spaces.

The landscape design also compliments the architecture of the surrounding buildings. Curving stairways set amongst water features reach various levels of the plaza. The theme is further brought to life with special lighting features and a unique monumental bronze fountain.

One of the highlights of the plaza is a large 24-point sunburst that welcomes pedestrians from the street.

Discovery Bay

In the early 1970s, Belt Collins provided planning, engineering and landscape architectural services to Hong Kong entrepreneur Eddie Wong for his proposed major urban development on 1,500 acres of Lantau Island in Hong Kong Bay. At the time, Lantau Island was completely undeveloped.

Following the original Belt Collins plan, today Discovery Bay is a massive residential and leisure community developed on Lantau Island’s varying terrain. In addition to Discovery Bay, the new Hong Kong International Airport is also located on Lantau. This is the same island where the firm is working on the large Hong Kong Disney project.

Reflecting unique living accommodations, Discovery Bay offers garden houses in a golf course area, vacation apartments in highrise condominium towers and future hotel rooms. Facilities include a 450-berth marina, swimming pools, playing courts, commercial and community buildings, and a ferry system linking the island with urban Hong Kong and Kowloon. The landscape features a Mediterranean theme including fountains, water features and colorful planting patterns.

Those who have visited or done business in Hong Kong know well the hustle and bustle of this famed city. Highrises march along row after row. Car traffic and foot traffic can be chaotic to say the least.

Even in the old Aberdeen district, 2,000 fishing junks would jostle for dock space so that they could peddle their wares. But because land is a precious commodity in this part of the world, it became apparent all of that would have to change.

Belt Collins was engaged to transform the shoreline area through an evolving master plan into a marina offering great respite. Nowadays members of the Marina Club can park their cars, berth their yachts, swim in sparkling pools, play tennis and get a workout where before thousands of fishmongers plied their trade.

The firm’s designers carried the water theme through the entire project by sculpting as a centerpiece a handsome rooftop 20- meter pool for races and leisure swimming. In recognition of making precious space work as hard as possible, a daytime children’s pool changes at night into a reflecting pool with fountains.
