A structural engineer is a professional man or women who is involved in the design and supervision of the construction of all kinds of structures such as houses, theatres, sports stadia, hospitals, bridges, oil rigs, space satellites and office blocks.
In contributing to the design of many of these structures the structural engineer plays a vital role in improving the quality of our environment, providing better standards for all.
Every construction project is unique and will involve the expertise of a number of professional people including a structural engineer. The specialist skills of a structural engineer will include calculating loads and stresses, investigating the strength of foundations and analysing the behaviour of beams and columns in steel, concrete or other materials to ensure the structure has the strength required to perform its function safely, economically and with a shape and appearance that is visually satisfying.
Like structures themselves, structural engineering is constantly advancing. More and more use is being made of sophisticated design processes involving advanced techniques based upon the operation of computers and other aids of modern science. To undertake all these tasks the structural engineer must be creative, able to communicate effectively, have an understanding of the work of other professionals, work well in a team and be at the forefront of engineering knowledge and technology
The education and training of structural engineers develops these skills and lead to professional qualifications and status. Charted or Incorporated Structural Engineers are required to pass a rigorous test of competence set by the Institution of Structural Engineers. They must also demonstrate to the Institution that they keep their professional knowledge continually up to date. Qualified Chartered Structural Engineers are recognised by the designatory letter IStructE/MIStructE/AIStructE?and Incorporated Engineers by the letters 'IEng AMIStructE'.
Structural engineers work in private consulting engineering firms, for local and national government, contracting firms, industrial organisations, and teaching and research establishments. There is plenty of opportunity to work on a variety of projects around the world such as the Sydney Opera House, the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong or the Millennium Dome.
Structural engineers are people who enjoy challenge, opportunity, responsibility and excitement.
